If you or someone you love has a bleeding or clotting disorder, you deserve the best possible care. At Atrium Health Levine Cancer, our hemophilia treatment center (HTC) offers comprehensive care to help you manage your condition and live a healthier, happier life.

In partnership with Atrium Health Levine Children’s, Levine Cancer has the only accredited pediatric and adult HTC in the Charlotte area that offers continuous care for patients of all ages. And with access to the latest treatments, top experts and complete support, we offer everything you need to thrive.

Patient care: What to expect

Our experts use the latest techniques and best practices to diagnose and treat your bleeding or clotting disorder to reduce complications and improve health outcomes. Plus, as an accredited HTC, we offer resources far beyond medical care – from emotional support to assistance with life challenges.

Our patients benefit from:

  • Clinical expertise. Our bleeding and clotting disorder patients are cared for by a hematologist (blood doctor) with more than 15 years of experience specializing in nonmalignant hematology, specifically in bleeding and clotting disorders.
  • A team approach. As an HTC, we care for all aspects of your well-being, from physical to emotional. Our HTC gives you access to specially trained experts who work as a team to address your needs. This group of experts includes hematologists, nurses, physical therapists, social workers and psychosocial professionals.
  • Convenience. To make your care more convenient, we offer annual comprehensive appointments that allow you to see your full care team in a single visit. Plus, we can help connect you with dentists, surgeons and any other specialty care providers you may need.
  • Better outcomes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), patients with hemophilia who received care from a designated HTC like ours are less likely to be hospitalized for bleeding complications and are less likely to die from hemophilia-related complications.

What we treat

At Levine Cancer, we treat all types of blood disorders, including both cancerous and non-cancerous diseases. And at our HTC, we specialize in treating:

  • Bleeding disorders, like hemophilia and von Willebrand disease
  • Clotting disorders, such as Factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene mutation

Bleeding and clotting disorders happen when there is a problem with your blood. Some people bleed more frequently or for a more extended period than most others. Other people tend to clot more regularly than the general population.

Most people with bleeding or clotting disorders were born with it because other family members have the same problem. Other people may not know until later in life that they have a problem with their blood. Our expert medical team will order blood tests and help you understand why you bleed too easily or form blood clots too easily.

Bleeding and clotting disorders: Treatments and services

We believe your care should be as unique as you are. Our experts will help you understand your treatment options and create a personalized plan that gives you peace of mind about your routine medical care and helps you manage your condition day to day. Our treatments and services include:

  • Factor concentrates: These medications can replace a missing protein (or “clotting factor”) so that blood can clot.
  • Adjunctive therapies: This therapy may be most beneficial to assist a clot with staying in place.
  • Anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents: If you’re at risk for clotting, your hematologist may prescribe this type of medication to help “thin” your blood.
  • Clinical trials: These research studies give you access to the newest and most promising treatments for bleeding and clotting disorders.
  • On-site infusion center: If you need factor concentrate, platelets, or other medication before or following a procedure, we can arrange an appointment so that you can receive what you need when you need it.
  • Psychosocial support: Our HTC psychologist understands that chronic disorders may have an impact on your mental and emotional health. To help you cope with any challenges, our psychologist will walk you through steps you can take to make your condition more manageable.
  • A comprehensive Resource Center: As a patient, you’ll have access to our Resource Center – a central hub where you can come for information, support and resources within Levine Cancer Institue and the community.
  • Access to “bleeding friendly” providers: We work with other healthcare providers that are experienced and comfortable with caring for people with bleeding disorders. These experts include dentists, hepatologists, OB/GYNs, physical therapists, orthopedists and prosthetist orthotists.
  • Help planning for surgeries and procedures: If you need surgery or dental work, our team will write a care plan that reduces the risk of bleeding after your procedure.
