Kris Gaston, MD
Dr. Gaston is a graduate of the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. Upon graduation from Northwestern, Dr. Gaston completed a residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and residency at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed a fellowship at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas, and joined McKay Urology in 2008.
Dr. Gaston specializes in the surgical management of cancer of the genitourinary tract including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, testes cancer and penile cancer. Of particular interest is bladder replacement therapy after bladder removal, post-chemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for testes cancer, and minimally invasive management of renal and pelvic genitourinary malignancies. Minimally invasive surgical expertise includes nerve-sparing robotic prostatectomy, laparoscopic and robotic partial nephrectomy, and robotic cystectomy. Dr. Gaston also is one of the only physicians in the region offering men targeted cryosurgical ablation of the prostate from primary prostate cancer patients and also post-radiation prostate cancer failures.
Dr. Gaston serves as the Director of the Multidisciplinary Genitourinary Oncology Program at the Blumenthal Cancer Center. This conference and clinic was designed to approach prostate, bladder and testes cancer from a multimodal approach giving patients with genitourinary cancers their best chance at cure and opportunity to engage in life saving national clinical trials.
The Multidisciplinary Genitourinary Oncology Program includes a team of medical and surgical oncologists and collaborates with a team of pathologists, radiation oncologists and radiologists to provide the best care possible for our patients.
Dr. Gaston is a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology, the Southeastern Section of the American Urologic Association, and the American Urologic Association. Dr. Gaston is also actively involved in the American Society of Clinical Oncologists and actively pursues genitourinary oncologyclinical trials being brought to Blumenthal Cancer Center.
Pierce B. Irby III, MD, FACS
After earning undergraduate degrees from Davidson College and N.C. State University, Dr. Pierce Irby III earned his medical degree in 1983 from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. Following his urology residency at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, Dr. Irby served as Chief Resident in Urology from 1989 to 1990. In 1992, he completed his endourology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.
Prior to joining McKay Urology, Dr. Irby served for more than 26 years on active duty with the Army. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Irby served as Chief of Urology Service at the 8th Evacuation Hospital in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm. He also was Director of the Urology Stone Center and Endourology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. from 1992 to 1999.
Today, Dr. Irby is Director of the Carolinas Kidney Stone Center, a dedicated subspecialty clinic for the preventive, medical, and surgical treatment of urologic stone disease. Dr. Irby has special interest and training in medical management of stone disease and advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques using endourology and laparoscopy.
Dr. Irby subspecializes in endourology, the minimally-invasive treatment of all disorders of the upper urinary tract, including:
- Renal Stone Disease
- Ureteral Stricture
- Transitional Cell Carcinoma
Urolithiasis, better known as kidney stones, is the most common of these disorders. In addition, Dr. Irby treats patients for ureteral stricture to manage obstructions in the ureter. Working with the Carolinas Laparoscopic & Advanced Surgery Program. Dr. Irby also treats patients with transitional cell carcinoma, a form of kidney cancer found in the collecting system of the kidney (urine space).
Michael J. Kennelly, MD, FACS
After earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Michael Kennelly received his medical degree in 1989 from the University of Cincinnati. From 1989 through 1994, Dr. Kennelly completed a surgical internship and urology residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He then completed a neurourology fellowship in 1995 at the University of Texas at Houston. Dr. Kennelly is board certified by the American Board of Urology. He is a member of the Society of Basic Urological Research, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and is a member of numerous other professional societies.
Dr. Kennelly sub-specializes in female urology, neurourology, and incontinence. In fact, Dr. Kennelly was one of the first physicians in North Carolina to subspecialize in female urology and neurourology, and currently one of only three in the state. In pursuit of these interests, Dr. Kennelly serves in four interrelated roles:
- Head, Section of Voiding Dysfunction and Female Urology - McKay Urology
- Director, McKay Urology - Carolinas Rehabilitation
- Director, Charlotte Continence Center - Carolinas Rehabilitation
- Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery - University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Dr. Kennelly is also involved in numerous clinical trials, testing innovative therapies for the treatment of urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse, bladder reconstruction and pelvic pain.
Angela K. Schang, MD
A Phi Beta Kappa award honoree, Dr. Schang completed her undergraduate degree graduating with highest honors from University of Florida with bachelor's degrees in biochemistry and molecular biology. She continued her education at University of Florida where she completed her Medical Degree in 1997, graduating with Honors in Research. She completed her residency in urology at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
She is board certified by the American Board of Urology and is a member of the American Urological Association, Southeastern Section American Urological Association, N.C. Medical Society, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association and the Society of Women in Urology.
Dr. Schang is committed to providing excellent patient care that is informed by her research. As a resident, Dr. Schang won the 2003 Distinguished Contribution Award for Outstanding Care of Urologic Patients, from the UTHSCSA Division of Urology. In addition, she won numerous awards for her research as a resident. She has published on topics including prostatecotomy, lithotripsy and kidney stone disease in leading research journals.
She previously practiced at Gaston Urological Associates in Gastonia and at the Salem VA Medical Center in Salem, Va., where she was staff urologist.
Chris Teigland, MD, FACS
After earning his undergraduate degree from Duke University, Chris Teigland, MD, earned his medical degree in 1980, also from Duke. Dr. Teigland completed his surgical residency in 1982 at the University of Utah. He then completed a urologic residency in 1987 at University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center (Parkland Hospital). Dr. Teigland was board-certified by the American Board of Urology in 1989 and recertified in 1997. He is a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and numerous other professional societies.
Dr. Teigland's clinical interest is focused on urologic oncology. His subspecialties include:
- Treatment of known or suspected prostate cancer
- Treatment of renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH): Dr. Teigland treats patients with enlarged, non-cancerous prostates (BPH). He provides in-office treatment with theBoston Scientific ProlieveTM system, a minimally invasive therapy for the symptoms of BPH.
Accordingly, Dr. Teigland is also involved in numerous urologic oncology clinical trials, testing new therapies for prostate and kidney cancer.
Dr. Teigland is a clinical professor of surgery at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and he serves as chairman of McKay Urology at Carolinas Medical Center. His academic responsibilities include:
- Administration of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Urology PGY-4 Resident Rotation at CMC.
- Administration and direct clinical instruction of General Surgery, Family Practice, Internal Medicine residents on their Urology rotation at CMC.
- Administration and direct clinical instruction of General Surgery, Family Practice, Internal Medicine residents on their Urology rotation at CMC.
