Residency Programs

Our residents have the choice of two training programs, General Practice Residency or Oral Medicine Residency. Each one offers unique opportunities as well as numerous practitioners from the community who volunteer in the clinical teach program.

Our Emergency Medicine residents receive world-class exposure to a full spectrum of medical and surgical pathology at one training site. Residents work side by side with renowned experts from around the globe who will become trusted colleagues. The program's unparalleled mentorship and academic opportunities allow residents to thrive in a rigorous yet supportive environment. As residents hone their skills, they also make meaningful, long-lasting connections with their peers and teachers. Our faculty is committed to social emergency medicine, inclusion and equity in education and health care.

Family Medicine is a specialty with many professional rewards for residents, centered around building relationships with our patients that can span a lifetime and multiple generations. As family physicians, we use our heads, hearts and hands in patient care, handling a wide variety of patients and medical conditions. Residents can choose between two options for residency training in family medicine, each with its own unique practice setting and strengths.

The Family Medicine Residency program at Atrium Health Cabarrus provides a full scope of family medicine training in a real-world community setting. Residents benefit from flexible training tracks and Areas of Concentration allow them to pursue a wide variety of career options. In fact, residents function as junior partners in their Family Medicine clinic home base. Cabarrus Family Medicine faculty and residents are better together and advocate to improve the health and well-being of everyone in their community.

The Internal Medicine program produces well-trained, highly capable physicians ready for practice and potential advancement in fellowship. Residents work with and learn from an engaged faculty, finding research opportunities within a supportive culture among colleagues. Our program features a strong foundation in general internal medicine, while our comprehensive curriculum and abundant opportunities for scholarship allow for tremendous flexibility in a resident's chosen career path.

The Medical Physics program is a two-year comprehensive post-graduate curriculum created to provide candidates with master's or doctoral level degrees in physics, medical physics, or a closely related field with knowledge and expertise in radiation oncology medical physics.

The Neurological Surgery Residency program is a subspecialty-based program designed to train skilled and compassionate neurological surgeons who aspire to assume national leadership roles in clinical innovation, medical education and neuroscience research. Approximately 3,500 operative neurosurgical procedures are performed each year at Atrium Health (an additional 1,200 neurosurgical cases are performed at the adjacent Carolinas Center for Specialty Surgery). Cutting-edge clinical and surgical facilities include intraoperative imaging and newly built and recently opened neurocritical care units, inpatient neurosurgery ward, neurosurgery clinics and a pediatric surgery specialty ward. Our accomplished neurosurgery faculty has been featured in both local and national media.

Our residents become fully immersed in our OB/GYN program’s mission, personality and spirit. Through comprehensive opportunities throughout the program, residents will prepare to enter their general obstetrics and gynecology practice or pursue further training in a subspecialty fellowship. These subspecialties are represented by the faculty members, including maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

Our orthopedic surgery residents train in a robust academic environment supported by one of the nation's largest public hospital systems. Located at both Carolinas Medical Center and OrthoCarolina, the program's educational philosophy stresses that the best environment for learning clinical medicine is achieved with one patient, one attending and one resident. Residents will experience a large clinical volume, participating in 300-500 cases during each clinical year. Graduated responsibility in the operating room and pre- and post-operative planning phases is granted so at the end of the program each resident is comfortable and competent in all subspecialty areas.

Our fully ACGME-accredited 3-year pediatric residency training program has a high patient volume, acuity and diversity without fellows. Based at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH), the faculty provides our pediatric residents with in-depth training in general pediatrics as well as multiple subspecialties, all in a child-friendly, child-focused, family-centered atmosphere. We also have years of fellowship match success, a 100% board pass rate and happy, hardworking residents.

Our program is a national powerhouse that provides comprehensive training and experience in all subspecialties of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Residents experience a collaborative, supportive culture among their peers while learning from thoughtful, caring faculty members. Programs offered include Brain Injury, Neuropsychology, Robot-Assisted Gait Training, Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke, Orthopedic, Amputee Rehabilitation and Cancer Rehabilitation.

In the Psychiatry program, residents will love the challenging yet supportive environment, all while connecting with happy, hardworking fellow residents and teachers. Unique training includes telepsychiatry, behavioral health integration, and private practice. Register for edifying electives including psycho-oncology, psychopharmacology, research, hospital administration and rural psychiatry.

The General Surgery Residency program provides residents with a balance of clinical training, formal education and research opportunities in all areas of general surgery. Residents experience a broad range of surgical contexts, develop exceptional technical and critical skills and cultivate professionalism throughout their tenure, graduating for future careers in surgical practice, surgical subspecialty fellowships and academic pursuits. The program is a traditional 5-year surgical program with optional research years for residents looking for additional research experience.

The Urologic Surgery Residency Training program is part of one of the largest independent academic centers in the country that trains more than 320 residents and fellows each year. We are dedicated to providing a diverse experience in both the clinical and surgical management of all conditions in urology as well as exposure to research methods and opportunities. Our primary goal is to train residents to be great general urologists, preparing them to enter either private practice or academic careers.
