When your child is affected by a clotting disorder like thrombosis, they deserve care from pediatric hematologists who offer the best possible treatments. Atrium Health Levine Children's is here for you: We’re home to some of the nation’s top experts in clotting disorders, and we use the latest, most effective therapies in treatment plans created just for your child.

About thrombosis

Clotting is a natural process that helps the body stop bleeding, but some people’s blood clots too much. This can block blood flow and trigger serious health problems. We treat a wide range of childhood clotting disorders, including:

  • Inherited thrombophilia, a genetic condition that causes blood clots.
  • Acquired thrombophilia, thrombophilia that patients develop often as a result of another condition like cancer, heart disease or kidney disease.
  • Less common clotting disorders like antiphospholipid syndrome.
  • Related conditions – clotting disorders can lead to stroke and other serious health issues. We can help your family through these conditions.

Treating thrombosis

We offer state-of-the-art treatments to help children with clotting disorders lead full, active lives. These treatments include:

  • Anticoagulants, which are medications that prevent blood clots. We use the latest anticoagulants including some that can be taken by mouth.
  • Thrombolytics, or medicines that help the body dissolve blood clots.
  • Compression stockings, or tight stockings that prevent blood from pooling and clotting in a child's legs.
  • Clinical trials, which give your child access to the most promising new therapies.

Other resources

Beyond leading treatments, we offer a wide range of resources to keep children happy and healthy including:

  • Child life specialists guiding families through the stress and emotions that go along with a serious illness. This includes helping children understand treatments and explaining illnesses to family members.
  • Pediatric psychologists helping kids and their families address the mental and emotional sides of treatment and recovery.
  • Physical therapists helping children overcome physical setbacks that may come with their illness.
  • School support including tutors and licensed teachers who help children keep their learning on track if they miss days of school.
