Ashley L. Sumrall, MD

I knew as a child that I wanted a career that combined science with helping others. Medicine gave me a meaningful way to do both. Each day, I’m motivated by the chance to support patients and families during challenging moments. My goal is to help people feel heard, informed and cared for, while helping them live better lives.

My approach to care is personal, compassionate and team based. I believe in partnering with patients and families to make decisions together. During a visit, you can expect me to listen closely, explain things in clear language and take time to walk through your options so you feel supported every step of the way.

I’m a medical oncologist who specializes in neuro-oncology, caring for people with cancers that affect the brain and nervous system. I serve as section chief of neuro-oncology at Atrium Health Levine Cancer and as a clinical associate professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. I’m board certified in medical oncology and internal medicine.

I work closely with a dedicated team that includes nurses, pharmacist, social workers and neuropsychology specialists, all of whom play an important role in providing thoughtful, coordinated care for every patient.

My clinical focus includes:

• Brain tumors and gliomas

• Glioblastoma and rare central nervous system cancers

• Cancer that has spread to the brain

• Cancer predisposition syndromes

• Clinical trials and new treatment options

• Supportive care to improve quality of life

I completed fellowship training in neuro-oncology at Duke University’s Tisch Brain Tumor Center and hematology-oncology training at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. I have devoted my career to caring for patients with complex brain tumors and leading clinical trials that explore new treatment options. My work focuses on helping bring promising therapies from research to patients in real-world care.

I’m also deeply involved in national efforts to improve cancer care. Through leadership roles with the American Society of Clinical Oncology and participation in the American Medical Association, I work to advance policies that improve access to care, support patients and strengthen the health care system. I collaborate with national and international teams focused on improving outcomes for patients with brain tumors.

Some of my career highlights include being named an ASCO Advocate of the Year and an ASCO Advocacy Champion. I have also been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and a Charlotte Magazine Top Doctor for several years. These honors reflect my commitment to improving care for patients through advocacy, research, leadership and clinical care.

In addition to patient care, I enjoy teaching and mentoring future physicians and helping shape the future of cancer care.

Outside of work, I enjoy reading and traveling. I value clear, open communication with every patient and family I meet. I’m actively involved in my community through my church and nonprofit service. I am married with four children, and I enjoy spending time with my family whenever I can.
