Aortic Disease

Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute’s redesigned Aortic Center brings nationally recognized experts in cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery and cardiology together to deliver the most effective treatment for each patient.

Recent Highlights

Specialized protocol for ruptured aortic aneurysms and thoracic aortic dissections: We are one of the only centers in the Carolinas offering this protocol.

Advanced genetic testing for aortopathies: We started offering this testing in collaboration with Sanger’s Marfan Syndrome and Genetic Aortopathy Clinic, which recently received national recognition from the Marfan Foundation.

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®) for cardiac surgery: Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center is the nation’s first accredited ERAS® Center of Excellence, for evidence-based, multidisciplinary, patient-centered and value-based care.

Remote patient monitoring program: Our aortic patients can participate in Sanger’s remote patient monitoring program. This program reduces readmissions by using Bluetooth technology and a smartphone app to monitor patients, and by offering virtual visits when needed. We leverage ERAS® protocols to continue improving outcomes while reducing complications and length of stay.

We continue to be at the forefront of new aortic technology. We are currently part of the TRIOMPHE trial for a new aortic arch stent graft system.

A Redesigned Aortic Center with an Aortic Cardiology Clinic

In 2022, Sanger redesigned the Aortic Center to enable seamless collaboration between cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac imagers, geneticists and vascular surgeons. Our goal is to continue providing the highest quality care for all patients with disease of the aorta (both thoracic and abdominal) while developing ways to further improve patient outcomes and experience. Incorporating an aortic cardiology clinic as part of the center allows us to provide even more comprehensive care, including appropriate surveillance of aortic aneurysm patients not meeting surgical indications, medical optimization of pre-surgical patients, effective management of post-operative and medically managed dissections, and a collaborative approach to severe aorto-occlusive iliac disease and complex acute aortic syndrome.

Awards and Recognition

  • Outline of United States.

Top 5 in the nation for TEVAR, EVAR and total aortic volumes.

  • Outline of planet Earth.

1st in the world to implant a branched stent graft designed to repair thoracic aortic aneurysms.

  • The Marfan Foundation.

Sanger achieved new recognition by being added to the Marfan Foundation’s Directory of Medical Institutions.

As leaders in thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) and endovascular aortic repair (EVAR), we continue to push the boundaries with treatments that include both leading-edge open procedures and minimally invasive endovascular repair techniques for thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms.
